Periodic Table of Elements – Middle School Worksheet and Activities

Would you like your middle school science students to better understand how the periodic table works?

The periodic table is packed with tons of information your science students need, but until they understand how to use it, the periodic table of elements may remain a mystery. This lesson unlocks the mystery of the periodic table making it accessible and easy to use!

Students begin the lesson with a Element Card Sort Activity. Given a set of information cards for some of the elements from the periodic table, students short the cards to groups, thinking of what the different elements have in common. This initial inquiry activity simulates the original work of chemists who constructed the periodic table and begins to unlock it’s system of organization for middle school science students.

Your science students will then jump into a reading passage where they are guided through discovering all the information available on the periodic table. As they read or observe the teacher presentation, your science students will take notes using the differentiated note-taking guide, create an annotated periodic table with the included periodic table worksheet, and create an element information graphic worksheet.

The reading passage is available in digital format through Google Drive, saving you on printing and paper.

Included in the resource is a ready-to-go teacher presentation in two formats- PowerPoint and Google Slides.
