Do you want to engage your middle school life science students with a hands-on, interactive approach to learning about the parts of a cell? Do your want to introduce the use of models but aren’t sure where to start? In this whole-class cell modelling activity, students will work with you to create a fun, edible cell model AND learn how to use models to display their knowledge of the parts of a cell and the cell organelles.
During the whole-class activity, you and your students will create food-based models using flavored gelatin and an assortment of candies. Together, you and your students will construct, dissect, and discuss the models. The activity includes a teacher guide and a worksheet for your students to use as they associate the model with the different parts of the cell.
This is a great way to introduce modeling to your students before asking them to model plant and animals cells on their own!
You can build on this modeling activity with the full lesson here where students independently make their own cell models and with The Cell City project where students take their modeling to the next level (find it here).
AND, if you want to take your students through the entire cell journey… Be sure to check out the bundle:
Cells and Organelles Unit Bundle
Be sure to check the thumbnails to see all that’s included and how you can use it in your classroom as you prepare your students to model all they know about cells!
