Introduction to the Microscope – Microscope Lab and Worksheets

Are you getting ready to introduce microscopes to your middle school science students but aren’t sure where to start?

Would you like your students to be successful at their microscope activities during your life science classes?

In this lesson, students learn how the microscope works and best practices for operating the microscope successfully!

Students will begin an exciting inquiry lab activity where they explore how light bends using a few simple objects such as a spoon, a prism, and a magnifying glass. This activity prepares students for some of the phenomena they are about to encounter when they work with the microscope!

Next, students will research all about how the microscope works and how to operate it correctly using the included reading passage. They will compile their research onto a “Parts of the Microscope” worksheet which will become a handy reference guide for students as they use the microscope in later labs. The reading passage is also available digitally through Google slides, so you can conveniently assign the reading to your students through Google Classroom and save on copies!

Finally, students will put their new skills to work with a fun “letter e” lab that helps students understand the principles of operating the microscope, particularly locating the specimen and collection data. They will practice their data collection with the included microscope data collection worksheet.

Also included is a fun STEM activity where students can turn their smartphone into a microscope!
