Hands-on Activities to Teach Mitosis and Meiosis

A simplified look at cell division and the cell cycle – perfect for the middle school classroom! In these interactive lessons, students will engage in several hands-on activities to help them conceptualize the very basics of mitosis and meiosis.

The focus of both lessons is on giving students a firm understanding of the outcome of each process. These lessons are aligned with middle school NGSS standards and will give students the foundation necessary for understanding genetics in later lessons.

Mitosis lesson includes:

* Reading passage about mitosis and comprehension questions

* A PowerPoint presentation that reviews the basics about cells and chromosomes and guides students through 2 examples of mitosis (with slides and video) as well as 1 independent practice

* A ‘mitosis map’ to be used with the PowerPoint presentation

* A mitosis worksheet – perfect for independent check for understanding (use as classwork, quiz, or homework)

* colored chromosome cutouts for use with the mitosis map activities and the mitosis flip book

* a student created mitosis flip book, perfect for including in a science notebook

* a final worksheet, assessing students understanding about the outcome of the mitosis process

During the mitosis lesson students will:

* Read about mitosis and answer questions about their reading

* Go through whole-class, guided practice taking a cell and its chromosomes through the process of mitosis (with use of a PowerPoint and manipulatives)

* Complete independent practice taking a cell and its chromosomes through the process of mitosis

* Create a mitosis flip book

* Complete 2 check-for-understanding assignments

Meiosis lesson includes:
